Box Hardware
This page is a placeholder, not verified instructions. The source material this whole site is built from (the existing installation document) doesn't cover opening the box up — I don't have confirmed disassembly steps (screw types/locations, safe battery handling, reassembly order), so I'm not going to invent them. What's below is limited to what's externally visible or already established elsewhere in this project. Whoever has actually opened one of these should fill in the real steps.
What's externally visible
- LiDAR unit (Livox Mid-360) — the domed sensor on top of the box.
- Weatherproof charging port — a screw-on cap on top of the box, next to the LiDAR unit, covering a USB‑C port (see Rider Operation for charging).
- Battery indicator window — on the box's base; shows a flashing percentage while charging.
- Red record/power button — on the back of the box; glows while the box is powered on.
What's inside (known, from the software side)
This is what's confirmed from the box's own software/OS, not from physically opening one:
- A Raspberry Pi 5, running the recording/upload software.
- An NVMe SSD for storage, mounted internally.
- A USB Wi-Fi adapter, used for the box's own hotspot — the onboard Wi-Fi handles the other role (uplink to an external network for uploading, or vice versa; see Troubleshooting & Diagnosis).
- The camera, wired directly to the Pi.
Driver/firmware-level detail for the Wi-Fi adapter lives in the backend docs — that's changed a few times as different adapter models have been used across the fleet, so treat any specific chipset/driver name as current only for whichever box it was last confirmed on, not a fleet-wide constant.
Dismantling the box
Not written yet — needs real steps from whoever has done this. At minimum this section should cover: what fasteners hold the case together, the safe order to disconnect things in (especially the battery), where the NVMe drive and Wi-Fi adapter physically sit, and how to put it back together without pinching any cables.
